There are many answers to this but the short answer is any sewing machine. And in order to start sewing you need a pattern and to learn how to cut well. So you can start without a machine at first. Also if you are serious about sewing then we reccomend an industrial single needle sewing machine. Like cars they are designed and built for different roads (fabrics) so in the end not just any machine can be used but to start its whatever you got. WHAT SEWING MACHINE DO I START WITH?
WHY ARE YOUR PATTERNS NOT CHEAP LIKE ETSY?
These are the same exact patterns that are used in the top factories all over the world and by the top corporations and brands. They have been distilled to a consumer level and are at 1/4 of the normal industry prices. They are also thoroughly designed and updated to ensure actual 3D and arent just boxes with arms or legs like what you find online. There is a huge difference between simple t shirt patterns ie. how they fit and a trouser is not a jean... You also gain a community and a cool sewing teacher.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMMERCIAL AND CONSUMER SEWING PATTERNS?
The language on the patterns, commercial patterns are desgined to be used by the factory and have all the communication neccessary for the factory, designer, sample maker to put it together. They also come as a marker for an average of a 48'' wide fabric. Consumer sewing paterns are distilled down and easier to understand and less definitive. They are more closer to blocks and the same pattern shapes as commercial but with less nuances and easier to sew and design with. The commerical patterns have a lot more subtilties and sculpting where as consumer is more straight foward literally ie. less 3D and easier to sew. Think of one really designed to fit and the other is more general.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR SUPPLIES AND SEWING MACHINES FROM?
I have an old guy in a garage who supplies the denim heads for over 30 years, an older chinese lady who owns a repair shop from over 20 years ago and my main supplier which is a family I have worked with over 15 years. I also source online to save you time on quality versus price. I only sell what I know, used and trust because if you get better the factory grows.
I CAN GET A LOT OF THIS STUFF FOR A BETTER PRICE, WHY SHOULD I BUY HERE?
Because a large percentage goes to feed my actual family and to getting you free stuff, hooking up students with supplies and machines., I saved you time, the circular economy and the access you get to asking me info and getting answers for the low.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PDF, DXF AND PAPER SEWING PATTERNS?
PDF you can print anywhere, have on your phone or print at home. It saves space also. DXF is the industry and factory standard for patternmaking in which we translate it to PDF or an AI which is a vectorized version which you can a world of things with and to. Think PNG, GIF, JPEG and HEIC.
IM CONFUSED ON WHERE OR HOW TO START...
Come to the Tuesday free Sessions at 6pm PST in the Discord and ask whatever and we will see where you at and give you some tasks to start that same day.
I DONT HAVE THE BUDGET OR SPACE TO START SEWING...
Yes you do, the world is huge and your brain will not be limited in that thinking in Holy Stitch!. All you need is paper to start and an idea and community. Talk to us and we will use our own experience to let you know how to make it happen and you will hear how alot of us are sleeping under machines and on fabric!!! That tile floor is a ruler and the local basket ball court can be a cutting table if you are hungry enough.
WHERE DO I GET FABRIC FROM?
Its in your closet! or.... the thrift store? A curtain a bedsheet? Craigslist? Start where you can touch it and feel the fabric and start there and rescue something that is not getting used and then when you have you design ready you will need yardage. This is where sourcing comes in and you can do this yourself or hire us to find it for you. Google is nice but we all know what can happen at times and fabric usually can be returned...schedule an intro call and fill out the form if you are truly ready to make that leap.
DO SEWING PATTERNS COME WITH LESSONS?
Not directly but when you are stuck you can ask Julian directly in the discord and he will guide you through whatever step. Instructions are coming soon for all the patterns but in the meantime Julian is at your service...
I DONT USE DISCORD HOW CAN I STILL BE A PART OF THINGS?
Hmmmmmm yes and no. We choose to use Discord because we can do alot more and the community can engage, download, ask and talk to each other on the daily Also fear of getting banned is always there on social. Discord is better quality than Zoom and allows more for learning. Get used to it if you want to learn.
IM INTERESTED BUT...
Yes we know...stranger danger and there are a lot of people online who claim to know and put on a good show. Dont worry, join teh Discord, poke around, send an email, fill out the form and it will setttle itself out. All we have is time so lets share it.
